This elective course is designed for students who wish to master advanced topics in Forensic Pathology. The course closely follows a medical school-type academic curriculum and is geared toward students who may be interested in pursuing a career as a medical examiner, a research scientist, laboratory manager or a director of operations within a laboratory-based facility. The course is taught on an organ-based system and explores diseases of the heart, lungs, nervous system, gastrointestinal system, endocrine system, genito-urinary system, hematopoietic system and musculo-skeletal system. An in-depth discussion of anatomical abnormalities and anomalies is scheduled for the final module.

Prerequisite:  

Course Objectives: 

  • Identify histologically the different organ tissues of the body
  • Identify normal human tissue from tissue that is diseased or has traumatic injury
  • Distinguish between organs that have an infective process and organs affected by cancer
  • Diagnosed common diseases using histology and associated laboratory studies
  • Be confident in requesting additional tests in order to reach a logical diagnosis
